The Valerian Teaser Trailer Is ‘More Star Wars Than Star Wars’

Back in July, we told you about Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ triumphant moment at San Diego Comic-Con. After unveiling several clips in Hall H, director Luc Besson received a standing ovation from the crowd, immediately raising expectations for this ambitious adaptation of the wildly influential French comic book from the ’60s. Well, we now have a teaser to scrutinize—and it shouldn’t take you more than a few seconds to see what all the fuss was about.

Featuring the same kind of intricate science-fiction imagery that made Besson’s The Fifth Element a fan favourite, Valerian appears to be a non-stop visual feast. Some may be tempted to call this out as some kind of Star Wars and/or Avatar rip-off, but the opposite is closer to the truth, as both of those blockbusters took significant inspiration from Valerian’s source material. The result of that lineage is a teaser that one YouTube commenter calls “more Star Wars than Star Wars.” Stills are no match for full-motion Valerian, but we suggest you brace yourself for:

Hyper-detailed environments

Gravity-defying robots

Psychedelic aquatics

And much more!

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets arrives in theatres on July 21, 2017. Check out the eye-popping teaser below.
