The Stakes Are Raised in the New Mission: Impossible Trailer
One of the big challenges of the Mission: Impossible franchise (and many others, for that matter) is our sense that the filmmakers would never let anything genuinely terrible happen to the protagonist. With that concern taken off the table, the crises have to escalate in other ways.
Now that Tom Cruise is 52, it may seem like a good time for Mission: Impossible to take the emphasis off extreme stunts and focus on something a little more age appropriate, but all signs suggest that Cruise still thinks and feels like a 25-year-old. Based on the new trailer for Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, it’s clear that the filmmakers are taking the “impossible” part of the title seriously, as Cruise (or at least Ethan Hunt) is repeatedly seen defying his age and the fundamentals of human safety.
In keeping with Mission: Impossible tradition, Cruise finds himself jumping from great heights. In this case, he falls into 70,000 gallons of pressurized water.
This underwater mission goes awry and Hunt appears to be dead… but he somehow manages a miraculous escape.
In fact, he proceeds directly into an insane pursuit involving a bunch of reckless bikers.
Cruise also does some motorcycle riding of his own, effortlessly causing nearby vehicles to explode.
In another sequence, he takes off his shirt and beats up a much younger man with his hands tied.
In an apparent nod to the Fast and the Furious franchise, Cruise also takes the wheel of a car and gets some backwards slowmo airtime.
Finally, we’re given another glimpse of arguably the most absurd stunt in Mission: Impossible history: Ethan Hunt dangling from the side of a moving airplane.
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation doesn’t arrive in theatres until July 31, but you can now watch the new trailer below.
