Is Luke Even In The Force Awakens? J.J. Abrams Weighs In

“Who is Luke Skywalker?” As legend has it, that’s the question J.J. Abrams was asked by Kathleen Kennedy back when the Lucasfilm president was attempting to get Abrams to agree to direct The Force Awakens. The chance to bring an answer to the screen was what convinced the director to take the job.

But where is Luke Skywalker? That’s the question fans are asking after taking note of the character’s conspicuous absence in the three Star Wars trailers the studio has put out (not to mention the posters and other promotional materials). So what’s up with this glaring lack of Luke? A number of spoiler-y theories are bouncing around the internet, but one Associated Press Jedi braved the perils of the red carpet to ask Abrams himself.

“It’s no accident.” said the director, confirming that the whole ‘no sign of Skywalker’ thing is intentional. “These are good questions to be asking. I can’t wait for you to find out the answers.”

But sharp-eyed Star Wars enthusiasts may actually have caught a glimpse of the Jedi in the latest trailer. Behold:

Cool hand, Luke. It seems as though Skywalker could be in hiding—maybe because Vader 2.0 (Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren) has made it his sworn mission to “destroy the Resistance and the last Jedi.” Have you seen that guy’s DIY lightsaber? We’d hide too.

Abrams, however, is not hiding—even though his film, on track to be the biggest release since Avatar, is out in less than two months and still isn’t finished. “My guess is we’ll probably be doing visual effects for the next three or four weeks, even though the cut will be done,” he told AP. “We still have another scoring session with John Williams, who’s a god when it comes to music, so it’s been an ongoing, surreal experience. I just cannot wait for the movie to be out in the world.” Obviously, he’s not alone.
