We’re still not entirely sure who plays what in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, but rumours are already starting to materialize about its sequel. According to The Wrap, Benicio Del Toro is in early negotiations to play an unnamed villain in Episode VIII. While the film is still untitled, we do know that Rian Johnson (Looper) is the writer-director, the film is scheduled to start shooting early next year, and it will arrive in theatres on May 26th, 2017.

The Wrap claims that “Disney and Lucasfilm are high on” Del Toro, who recently worked with Disney on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. An Oscar-winner for 2000’s Traffic, the actor is best known for playing colourful supporting roles in films like The Usual Suspects, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Snatch, and Inherent Vice. In recent years, he has taken a stab at leading man status with two little-seen biopics (Che, Escobar: Paradise Lost) and The Wolfman, arguably the film that best prepared him for the villainous requirements of Episode VIII.

Assuming Del Toro makes this official, we still have nearly two years to wait before the film’s release. In the meantime, you can catch Del Toro in Canadian director Denis Villeneuve’s Traffic-esque drug drama Sicario, which is scheduled for release on September 18th.
