Meet Your New Klingon Overlords—Star Trek: Discovery Introduces 3 More Cast Members

Returning 2020

Late last month, Star Trek: Discovery announced that actors Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones, and Anthony Rapp would be the first three cast members beamed aboard all-new starships in the Brian Fuller-run series debuting in 2017. Now we’re getting an intro to three more actors—and possible adversaries: Klingons played by Chris Obi, Shazad Latif, and Mary Chieffo. Here’s what we know about their roles:

Chris Obi as T’Kuvma

Obi has a role in the upcoming Ghost in the Shell movie alongside Scarlett Johansson, Michael Pitt, and Juliette Binoche. He’s also had guest spots on sci-fi shows like Doctor Who and 2017’s American Gods (also a Brian Fuller show). In Discovery, he’ll play a Klingon leader on a mission to unite the divided Klingon houses.

Shazad Latif as Kol

In 2015, Black Mirror veteran Latif had roles in The Man Who Knew Infinity and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. He also played Dr. Henry Jekyll in Showtime’s horror drama, Penny Dreadful. Latif will take on the part of the Commanding Officer of the Klingons in the new Star Trek series. His Kol is a protégé of Obi’s T’Kuvma.

Mary Chieffo as L’Rell

With just eight acting credits to her name, Chieffo is a relative newcomer. While you may not yet know her work, as the Battle Deck Commander of the Klingon ship on Star Trek: Discovery, she’s about to attract a lot more attention.

The new Trek series will premiere on Space in May of 2017.
