The Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson Praises Solo: A Star Wars Story

Director Rian Johnson is far from an objective source when it comes to the Star Wars universe. In addition to writing and directing The Last Jedi, he’s currently developing a new trilogy for Lucasfilm. With all that in mind, there are plenty of good reasons to second-guess his Instagram review of Solo: A Star Wars Story—and he’s the first to acknowledge this: “Who’s going to read this and take me seriously? I’d like to think I’d still be honest, but it’s not like you’re going to come to my Instagram story for hard-edged film criticism on a Star Wars movie.”

As for his actual assessment of the film, it’s relatively brief, but he acknowledges that “the action scenes are great” (as expected) and the performances are even better. “Donald Glover is great in it, but duh,” he wrote. “Alden [Ehrenreich] is terrific. He’s not doing a Harrison Ford impersonation but he brings his own charm and swagger to the character.”

However, Johnson reserves his greatest praise for a British TV actor who apparently steals the show as L3-37. “The big surprise for me was Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Bridge-Waller?), who has a few of the funniest moments I’ve ever seen in a Star Wars movie. I had never watched Fleabag (I know, I know, I need to watch it—I’m loving Killing Eve, but she’s not in that, she only wrote it), so it was a pleasant surprise.”

Solo: A Star Wars Story arrives in theatres on May 25. Check out the trailer below.
