The Mr Men Books Meet Doctor Who In A New Mashup

Season Premiere January 1

Mr Tickle, Little Miss Chatterbox, and 2013’s Game of Thrones-inspired Mr Brutal and Little Miss Vengeance are getting a new batch of characters added to their crew: the 12 new Mr Men will be modelled after the Doctors in Doctor Who—one for each regeneration.

The Mr Men series was created by author/illustrator Roger Hargreaves in 1971 and, since his death in 1988, has been kept going by his son Adam, who draws and writes the new stories. It’s the younger Hargreaves who’s behind the new mashup, inspired by fans of the books who’ve been making and sharing their own Mr Men art online.

“There has been a market for ironic takes and mash-ups from old classics done with a new twist,” The Bookseller editor Philip Jones told BBC News. “This clearly taps into that same market. With these types of book it’s all to do with getting that combination of humour of nostalgia right.”

While each Doctor will ultimately get his own book, the release of the editions will be spread out, with the first four—Dr First, Dr Fourth, Dr Eleventh, and Dr Twelfth—landing on bookstore shelves in the spring of 2017.

Since the Doctor has yet to regenerate as a woman, it means there’ll be no new Who-themed Little Miss books—which is too bad, because a Little Miss Spoilers edition for River Song or a Little Miss Missy book in honour of The Mistress would be pretty cool.
