Who Will Johnny Depp Play In The Fantastic Beasts Sequel?

Welcome to the world of wizarding, Johnny Depp. Three weeks ahead of the premiere of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, there’s been a big reveal.

The spinoff franchise (yep, franchise—Warner Bros. plans on a total of five films) that’s grown out J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter universe, features Johnny Depp in a cameo role—but there’s more.

Spotted by reviewers at early screenings, news of Depp’s small part reached the public earlier this week, which is maybe why the studio has made the announcement that he’ll play a starring role in the second installment, scheduled for a November, 2018 release. Rowling confirms that she’s already finished writing it.

The big question, then: who is he playing? Good guy or villain? Maj or No-Maj? (That’s ‘Muggle’ in Americanese for those of you still trying to adjust to the jump from England to New York.)

Armchair Potter experts speculate that Depp will play a formidable foe to Eddie Redmayne’s protagonist, Newt Scamander. If they’re right, then Depp’s Potter-verse name is Gellert Grindelwald (who superfans will remember was an especially dangerous dark wizard defeated by Dumbledore himself in 1945). That might mean that Depp’s gone platinum blonde for this role—see Exhibit A, a still from the Fantastic Beasts trailer:

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them stampedes into theatres on November 18. In addition to Redmayne, the movie also stars Katherine Waterston, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, and Ron Perlman. Both it and the sequel will be helmed by veteran Potter director David Yates. Check out the latest trailer below.
