James Gunn Directed A Whole Bunch Of New Stan Lee Cameos

On the brink of turning 94, Stan Lee is one of the more precarious ingredients in Marvel Studios’ recipe for success. As Kevin Feige explained last month, Lee’s movie cameos are now being shot in batches, in order to save the comics legend any unnecessary strain. After a special screening of Doctor Strange at EW PopFest on Friday, director Scott Derrickson revealed who was behind the camera for the latest day of Lee shoots: Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn. “It’s a big deal for a 93-year-old man to go to a movie set and spend a day shooting,” Derrickson explained. “James shot four cameos with Stan in one day.

Known for his memorable Facebook rambling, Gunn took the time to elaborate on this unconventional collaboration. “It was definitely one of the most fun times I’ve ever had on set,” he wrote. “There are few people in this world I love and admire more and have more fun with than Stan Lee—even though he does love breaking my, and everyone else’s, balls. (I introduced him to Tom Holland for the first time and he said, ‘Everyone says you’re great! Personally, I don’t see it.’)”

As enthusiastic as Gunn is about his recent work with Lee, he thinks Derrickson’s cameo count might be slightly inflated. “To be honest, I think I only did three cameos,” Gunn clarified. “One was shot by someone else. And my third probably isn’t what you think it is. If you’ve seen the Doctor Strange cameo, it was one of many versions I shot on the day, and Scott Derrickson chose the final one. If I’m writing for Stan, why give him one line when I can give him a thousand? I just kept throwing lines at him one after the other, until we were all doubled over with laughter.”

To see which cameo made the cut, check out Doctor Strange when it opens in theatres on Friday. In the meantime, there’s nothing strange about watching the trailer one last time—and you can find it below.
