Meet The Real Star Of Independence Day: Resurgence In The Latest Teaser

We already know who’s returning for Independence Day: Resurgence, but here’s a quick recap: Vivica A. Fox, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, and Bill Pullman are all back, while Mary McDonnell, Randy Quaid, and Will Smith are sitting this one out. Charlotte Gainsbourg, Liam Hemsworth, and Brent Spiner might not have what it takes to fill their predecessors’ shoes, but judging from the new teaser that premiered during last night’s Super Bowl, director Roland Emmerich has found another way to fill the void: over-the-top destruction.

This teaser keeps its messaging as simple as possible. Aside from a few lines of dialogue (Pullman’s “they’re coming back” and Goldblum’s “what goes up, must come down”), the only words we get are the lyrics to “The Star-Spangled Banner” and a line of text that suggests it’s your patriotic duty to see this movie—even if you’re not American. As the teaser explains, “The world will unite for independence this summer.” Sure, independence might cross their minds, but they’ll mostly just be uniting to see stuff blow up. Judging from this new teaser, they won’t be disappointed.

“After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale,” Fox promises. “Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.”

Independence Day: Resurgence invades theatres June 24th, just in time to celebrate the holiday in its title. For a glimpse of the chaotic (and patriotic) destruction that awaits, watch the new teaser below.
