Brand-New Guardians 2 Art Features Mantis And Baby Groot

Late last month, we received new plot details for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, as well as confirmation that the shoot was finally complete. With San Diego’s Comic-Con International (and all kinds of revealing updates) just a week away, Entertainment Weekly has revealed another treat for fans who can’t wait to learn more about one of the most anticipated sequels on the current release schedule. You won’t find new cast members Kurt Russell, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, or Tommy Flanagan in this eye-popping concept art (see above), but you will notice some important new characters.

For one, Mantis—the new Guardian played by Québécois actress Pom Klementieff—can be spotted bearing a vague resemblance to Gamora, but with antennae and spooky insect eyes. According to executive producer Jonathan Schwartz, you can expect this newcomer to learn some unconventional lessons from her fellow Guardians. “She has never really experienced social interaction,” he says. “Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.”

After going through some tough times in Guardians Vol. 1, Groot was able to regenerate, but Schwartz says the new Groot is significantly different from his previous incarnation. “He doesn’t have the wisdom and experience of that Groot,” he explains. “He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?”

We’re likely to have more Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 updates in the weeks ahead, but you’ll have to wait until May 5, 2017 for the movie itself.
