George Lucas Gives Rogue One The Thumbs Up

While you still have to wait a little bit longer to find out what the critics have to say about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the world’s leading Star Wars authority—and the guy who gave birth to the whole phenomenon—has made his perspective known… sort of. While George Lucas has yet to offer any thoughts on the record, director Gareth Edwards took the liberty of sharing some private comments during a recent press conference at the headquarters of Industrial Light and Magic.

“I don’t want to put words into his mouth, but I can honestly say that I can die happy now,” Edwards said. “He really liked the movie, so it meant a lot. No offense to anyone here, but it was the most important review to me. You guys are important too, but he’s kind of god. I will take that conversation to my grave. It was a real privilege. His opinion means the world to me.”

While this certainly gives fans reason to be optimistic, committed skeptics should keep a few things in mind: (1) George Lucas’ perspective on Star Wars hasn’t always been reliable in recent years, (2) the basic rules of etiquette would call for him to be somewhat enthusiastic, and (3) Edwards might be exaggerating. Just last year, producer Kathleen Kennedy suggested that Lucas liked The Force Awakens, only to be corrected by his more carefully worded assessment: “I think the fans are going to love it. It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for.” That said, Edwards went much further than Kennedy in relaying Lucas’ praise, so it seems safe to say that he likes Rogue One more than he likes The Force Awakens.

We should hear more from Lucas in the weeks to come, but you’ll have opinions of your own by then, as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theatres on December 16. For a fresh glimpse behind-the-scenes, check out the new creature featurette below.
