The Game of Thrones Season 5 Goodies You Didn’t Know You Wanted—But Obviously Do

As we all know, there’s just over a month to go before Game of Thrones returns to HBO. Lucky for us, season five was released on Blu-ray/Digital HD and DVD today and it’s stacked with enough tasty extras to keep you going until season six’s premiere on April 24.

Showrunners may be greedy when it comes to information on Jon Snow’s death and the future of our favourite characters, but they never fail to deliver on bonus content that gives fans inside access on the show’s production and Westeros’ history.

When you’re done methodically breaking down the season six trailer, move on to exploring the world of Westeros by following our guide to the best bonus content included on the season five Blu-ray and DVD.

1. New Characters/New Locations

With the life expectancy in Westeros being at an all-time low, it’s always exciting to have new characters added into the fold. This featurette gives fans an in-depth look into the world of the Sand Snakes in Dorne, the High Sparrow in King’s Landing, and the Gods in the House of Black and White. Actual interviews with the new cast members are a nice touch.

2. The Real History behind Game of Thrones

Why spend endless hours on Reddit trying to map Martin’s plans for Westeros when you can look at history as a source to draw conclusions. In parts one and two of The Real History behind Game of Thrones, Martin and historians compare similarities of real-life events to those of Thrones. To wit, the Red Wedding, Purple Wedding, and Walk of Shame weren’t far off from the real deal.

3. Histories and Lore

Cast members in character dissecting the ancient history of Westeros makes Martin’s fantasy sound like a real occurrence in time (maybe it was—see above). If you’re lost reading the books or watching the show, this animated extra is for you. You’ll be able to put the most obnoxious Throne-head in their place.

4. A Day in the Life

Shooting a show with the production level of Thrones is more complex than the game itself. This bonus feature shows fans the inner workings of the process as the show operates in three different countries over the course of a 24 hour period.

5. The Dance of Dragons

Blu-ray bonus: HBO slipped in a full featurette dedicated to the breakdown of House Targaryen and the slaughter of their relatives in the House Targaryen civil war. There’s as much blood and guts as you’d hope for from a family once led by a Mad King. Luckily–or unluckily–the feature’s animated and won’t turn your stomach into knots, but it will leave you wishing there were more Targaryens to root for.

Bonus goodies also include Anatomy of Mother Mercy, an inside look at filming the final episode of season five; deleted scenes; audio commentaries; and an in-episode guide if you’re fancy enough to purchase the Blu-ray.
