Danny DeVito Is ‘Very Excited’ To See Colin Farrell’s Take On The Penguin
2019 keeps bringing Danny DeVito back to 1992, specifically his time spent playing The Penguin (aka Oswald Cobblepot) in that year’s most anticipated (and divisive) sequel: Batman Returns. First he re-teamed with director Tim Burton on March’s underrated Dumbo, and now his co-star from that film, Colin Farrell, has been hired to play The Penguin in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The two actors are totally different physical types, which makes the casting of Farrell somewhat head-scratching—until you realize Reeves probably has a radical reinvention of the character in mind.
In any case, DeVito was recently asked to weigh in on this casting choice, and he gave Farrell a ringing endorsement. “Colin is a great actor,” he told Comicbook.com. “I’m excited to see what he’ll do in the part. It’s a really great, many-layered character, so I’m very, very excited to see that because I was a big fan of the comic books and I loved working with Tim Burton and I had a hell of a shorthand with that one and I love doing Oswald, so I’m very much looking forward to my friend Colin and see what he has to do.”
If all goes according to plan, The Batman should arrive in theatres on June 25, 2021. For a reminder of DeVito’s take on The Penguin, check out the trailer for Batman Returns below.
