Daniel Radcliffe Is In Talks To Play His Strangest Role Yet

Daniel Radcliffe is best known for playing Harry Potter, but since his time at Hogwarts ended he’s taken on a pretty peculiar range of roles — like the demonic Ig Perrish from “Horns,” college-aged Alan Ginsberg in “Kill Your Darlings,” and Igor in the upcoming James McAvoy-led “Victor Frankenstein.”

But you know what part we never expected him to play? The guy who invented a video game where you steal cars and beat up sex workers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, that reality is looking fairly likely, as Daniel Radcliffe is currently in negotiations to appear in a TV movie for British television inspired by “Grand Theft Auto.” Not the actual games themselves, mind you — the behind-the-scenes story of how they were almost banned for their intense depictions of violence and sex.

Radcliffe will reportedly star as Rockstar Games’ co-founder and president Sam Houser, who’s widely credited with making the “Grand Theft Auto” series into a household name. As the games surged in popularity, Rockstar found itself under repeated attacks from controversial Florida lawyer (though he was disbarred in 2008) Jack Thompson, who first rose to prominence in the early ’90s for his campaign to bring obscenity charges against 2 Live Crew’s “As Nasty As They Wanna Be” album. “GTA” became his favorite target in the early to mid ’00s after the third game was released, and in many online communities today, Thompson’s name is still synonymous with games censorship.

Owen Harris, who also worked with Radcliffe on “Kill Your Darlings” and directed several episodes of the infamous “Black Mirror,” is officially attached to the project. The movie is based on the book “Jacked: The Outlaw Story of Grand Theft Auto,” and will start filming later this month. However, the role of Jack Thompson hasn’t been cast yet. He might not be the best fit, but they should see if Alan Rickman’s up for the part– you know, for old times’ sake.
